You are at war.  All around you, Satan, the fallen angels, demons, and other evil powers wage total war.  You are surrounded.

“Those poor bastards,” he said. “They’ve got us right where we want them. We can fire in any direction now!”

– Chesty Puller, USMC

By yourself, the battle would be quickly lost.  You can see the end results of people losing this battle every day.  Divorce, drugs, suicide, hatred, sexual immorality, but the most insidious of all end results is apathy and the concept of a modernization of the moral code.  Just over this past weekend, I personally have observed this apathy and modernization first hand with news articles promoting the death of monogamy, the glorification of homosexual lifestyles, and the endless litany of moral justifications throughout the media and the culture as a whole.

This is an endless bombardment. It is meant to ensnare you, to cause you to doubt your worth (or to overvalue it), to make you think that your lot in life is just not good enough, or to make you think you as missing out on something amazing. My wife posted a while back on her blog about one such snare thrown out to trap believers.

Satan and the forces of darkness are cunning, smart, and scriptural.  They know the Truth better than you and I.  They also have spent a great deal of time studying human nature and your own personal temptations that you deal with daily.  Whether you have a problem with lying, lust, greed, malice, or gluttony, they are fully aware of it and how to target it just right to get you to trip up.  They do not need to possess someone physically in order to drive a wedge between you and God, they just appeal to your sin nature.  Satan truly is a fantastic marketer.  Just think about the story in Genesis about the fall of man.

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Genesis 3:1-5

The marketing here is truly brilliant.  Knowledge?  How can that be bad?  The simplest temptation is one often wrapped in the goodness of truth.  Seeking to gain knowledge by itself is not in and of itself wrong.  How it is obtained can be wrong, but in this case, I want to focus on what the knowledge was concerning.  Before the moment where the fruit was eaten, Adam and Eve knew only of God and of His creation.  God is good. His creation was pronounced by God to be good.  Adam and Eve already had half of this knowledge already!  Satan appealed to Eve with a morsel of truth.  Contained within though was the knowledge of evil.

Now what can be done?  Our enemy is cunning, vast, powerful, and will stop at nothing to destroy you before God.  How can we face our life, admit that we are surrounded and find hope?  How can one snatch victory from the jaws of defeat?

What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written:

For your sake we face death all day long;
    we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:31-39

Allegiance to Christ will not eliminate the temptations in your life.  You will be under constant attack, but with Christ standing with you, you will find boundless strength to brush off the evils of the world.  Stand firm.

You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.
