The Night of Long Knives

Quick history lesson first before we get into the here and now.

The Night of Broken Glass (Kristallnacht) occurred more than 70 years ago.  This was a German move against members of their own society – Jews.  Jewish-owned stores, buildings, synagogues, homes, hospitals, and schools were attacked – windows broken, demolished, ransacked, vandalized, and burned to the ground.  91 Jews were killed. 30,000 Jews were arrested. Over 1,000 synagogues were burned. Over 7,000 Jewish businesses had their buildings destroyed.  Up until this point in time, Jewish persecution in German-held territory had been limited to politics, social status, and economics.  Following this night, that persecution shifted to physical violence – beatings and murder.  Kristallnacht is considered the very beginning of the horrible evil that has come to be known as the Holocaust.

Now, why would I bring this up today?

Because we, as humans short on perspective and wisdom, are so prone to revisit the mistakes and evils of the past.

Following nearly a week of church burnings and Islamist attacks on Christian sites, the targeting of Christians in Egypt continued with reports of nuns being paraded in the streets, two Christians killed, a statue of the Virgin Mary decapitated, and two Christian female siblings being groped by a mob.

Many Islamists Fault Egypt’s Coptic Christians

In Egyptian village, Christian shops marked ahead of church attack

Islamist mob parades nuns in Cairo as prisoners of war after six hours looting church school and replacing cross with banner resembling Al Qaeda flagThe tremors in Egypt threaten to engulf the region and the world as an whole in a conflict unseen on this planet for a generation.  Christians make up a small minority of the population in Egypt and they are a likely scapegoat for the troubles in that country, the question we have to ask ourselves is who the Egyptians will blame when all of the Christians have been bled out or fled the country.  Israel is next door.History has a nasty habit of repeating itself.

Fallout – Zimmerman Verdict

I held off on posting more on this trial until the verdict was in because so much was supposition based on what evidence would be submitted, what testimony would be heard, and what conversations would occur between the jurors once the case was given to them to decide.

Personally, as someone who paid attention to the situation from the beginning, the trial, and has served on a jury before as the foreman, I have just a few observations.

  1. The prosecutorial misconduct in this case stretches from here to China and back – concealing evidence, apparent construction of evidence/testimony, and a gross overcharge on murder two.
  2. The judge was pretty clearly biased and at one point in the trial it was almost as comedic as a Saturday Night Live sketch with the number of objections sustained by the judge for the prosecution and overruled for the defense.  The verbal lashing she gave the defense, during their portion of the trial regarding Zimmerman’s potential self-testimony, was ridiculous and unbecoming of anyone on the bench at any level.
  3. The reaction of the masses as an whole were not unexpected by me.  There are strong opinions about this whole case – perpetuated by the media’s handling of the case (constant referrals to Trayvon Martin as a kid and using pictures of him that predated that fateful night by five or six years at the least gave the perception of an innocent kid instead of a large black man who was physically larger and more athletic than Mr. Zimmerman).  The media’s portrayal essentially convicted Mr. Zimmerman months before this trial which left the riotous fools wanting blood when he was eventually acquitted in court.
  4. Now the more radical members of society are calling for the blood of the jurors from professional athletes, politicians, and other so-called celebrities are lamenting the verdict publicly – further fanning the flames of hate and distrust in society.
  5. It’s watershed moments like this that lead some people to make stupid decisions – such as those that lead to riots, arson, revenge attacks, and other criminal acts.
  6. While I live in the suburbs, I’m not completely confident that will be a buffer anymore in light of active threats and that is why my magazines are loaded for my FDR.
