Government Shutdown: Day 8

With the debt ceiling fight looming and now taking over the focus of this shutdown, I personally don’t believe there is an end in sight as long as the President and Senate Majority Leader (Harry Reid (D) of Nevada) refuse to negotiate despite their protestations to the press that they are trying to negotiate.  When one side refuses to budge in a fight of this magnitude, the other side digs in more as well… we’re seeing the political equivalent of trench warfare at this point.

As part of my ongoing public service, allow me to highlight an agency that I did not know existed until this morning – the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences.

Who the heck knew we had an IMLS?

So what is it that this wholly essential branch of the government actually does?

The mission of IMLS is to inspire libraries and museums to advance innovation, lifelong learning, and cultural and civic engagement. We provide leadership through research, policy development, and grant making.

IMLS Mission

Okay… I can’t take it this time.  Seriously?  Our taxes go to fund this…. crap?!?

Museums have traditionally run on endowments from wealthy people that leave large sums of money or property from their estate.  Libraries used to run on endowments as well such as those made by Andrew Carnegie and others.

Seriously though – where in Sam Hill can you find ANY constitutional mandate for the IMLS?

This shutdown started over Obamacare. I firmly agree with the conservative position of defund or repeal.  I think we have a few more sections of public expense that need defunded and dismantled and the IMLS is one of those.

Government Shutdown: Day 7

One week.

Take a look around you. The world has not ended. Life as it is goes on mostly as it usually has been despite the furlough of 13% of the federal government.  For most of the business world, a 13% staff reduction is something that happens every now and then – it’s called trimming the fat.

Today I want to take a look at the National Park Service as part of my ongoing public service to help you, Mr. Joe Citizen, survive this nasty government shutdown.  National parks from Atlantic to Pacific have been closed off by order of the executive branch (read: President Obama) in order to “make life as difficult for people as we can.”

I’ve had the inclination since the beginning of this that there are those in government that are fearful that this shutdown will be enlightening to the majority of Americans.

How will it be enlightening?

Let me serve you an example to demonstrate.

You pull up to your local national park to go for a hike and find the parking lot barricaded with a sign saying it is closed due to the shutdown.  You decide to park on the side of the road, take your hike anyway, and then leave.

Aside from bolting the parking lot gate, what role in that hike did the National Park Service play?

Well, they cut the trail.

Sure and so could a troop of boy scouts.

They clean up the park.

So can volunteers, again – boy scouts, prisoners on work release, people on community service, etc.

They protect me while I’m in the park through the park rangers.

Do they now?  When a coyote pack attacks your pet dachshund is there a park ranger walking next to you?  When the wolf pack was stalking you during your three mile jog, was there a ranger running beside you the entire circuit?

Well, they investigate crimes.

So, they’re basically just police that wear tan and olive green instead of black or blue?  You realize that police don’t have a legal obligation to protect you from anything and that ultimately you and you alone are responsible for your self-preservation.

What I’m trying to get at is that the government, and by the government, I mean the bureaucratic chiefs that are trying to protect their power and authority, and the executive branch all the way up to the President himself are deathly afraid that through the dramatics, or lack thereof except when artificially constructed (especially concerning the parks since they’re the most visible of the examples in the media), Mr. Joe Citizen will finally realize how little the federal government does for him in his daily life and how bloated it has become and ensconced in extra-constitutional “duties” it has deemed for itself.

It’s time to wake up America.  Look around you and realize the truth that this shutdown is the best thing for this country in the long term.

Government Shutdown: Day 4

Howdy all!

In honor of the government shutdown today I’m going to make a proposal that will not only save the American taxpayer money, but also show some good will to an extremely long treasured ally of ours.

Today’s agency of focus with it’s doors completely shuttered at this moment in time is the American Battle Monuments Commission.  The ABMC maintains and staffs the American servicemen cemeteries around the world, with the most well known in Normandy, France.  9,387 American servicemen that lost their lives on June 6, 1944 during Operation Overlord (and more popularly known as D-Day) as tens of thousands of American soldiers and marines stormed the beaches in Normandy to burst open Hitler’s Atlantic Wall and begin the liberation of France and the rest of Western Europe.  Since that time, the ABMC has run these foreign cemeteries.

I propose permanently shuttering this commission and offering it back to France.  France owes it’s existence to those American servicemen interned in her soil and I believe that they will honorably and justly preserve and protect those cemeteries as hallowed ground long after the federally-funded staff have all left.

Granted, we need to clear it with France first, but I believe that they would love to have the honor of celebrating those men’s lives and will keep those cemeteries as beautiful as they are today.

And frankly, considering the treatment that our living veterans of World War II have been treated lately by the attempts at the National Park Service to lock them out of a privately funded memorial to the sacrifices of their brothers-in-arms, I think the French will give those men and those that left it all on the beaches of Normandy all of the respect and honor that they deserve.

Government Shutdown: Day 2

In light of the ongoing federal government “shutdown,” allow me to provide a necessary and vital service for the American people.  I will pick and choose various agencies within the federal government that are claiming that they will not be able to perform some of their duties until full funding levels are restored.

The Center for Disease Control, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, is responsible for keeping a weather eye on the horizon for infectious diseases. According to the CDC website, their mission is as follows.

CDC works 24/7 to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

CDC increases the health security of our nation. As the nation’s health protection agency, CDC saves lives and protects people from health threats. To accomplish our mission, CDC conducts critical science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise.

According to the news this morning, the CDC is not going to be able to track the fall and winter influenza strains that are expected every year.  So in light of the continuing government shutdown, please follow these basic guidelines to protect you and your family from the calamity that is THE FLU.

  1. Get a flu shot (offered at such hard to find places as Walgreens, your doctor’s office, and most health clinics).
  2. Wash your hands regularly and especially before you touch food, your mouth, eyes, or nose.
  3. Eat smart – fruits, vegetables, especially those containing Vitamin C and Zinc.
  4. Exercise regularly.
  5. Don’t cut back on sleep.

Amazing stuff really.  It’s a shame that the government isn’t fully funded in order to tell us such vital information to prevent an annual occurrence.

The Answer to Your Prayers?

Where do you turn when you’re in need?

Needs vary for each person – for one it might be something as simple as hunger or thirst, for another it could be anguish over the loss of a loved one, for a third it could be a chronic illness with their child, it could be the loss of a job, or personal financial collapse, homelessness, loneliness, and far more.

Who and where we turn varies as well.  Some turn to family, others to friends, some refuse to turn and stubbornly try to shoulder their needs by themselves without inconveniencing others.

Others turn to the government.

Hungry – we have SNAP, CSFP, TEFAP, and SFSP and those are just the Federal subsidies available.  State programs vary, but are just as comprehensive in scope.

Housing – we have HUD, public housing, vouchers, etc…

and on and on…

The problem here is one of dependency.

When you become dependent on something, anything to live, you become a slave, a servant. Your provider becomes, in essence, a god to you – able to provide ad nauseum for transient reasons, and as easily able to withdraw those provisions, or to eventually decide, for you, what you truly need… up to and including a bullet in the brain.

So whom do you serve?

The faux-god that is the government or the One True God?

Lust and Power

If you’ve ever watched or read Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, the lust for power is well imagined in the lust for the One Ring.

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,

One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them

The lust for the ring of power was great.  It was known to contain great power and endowed the bearer with magical abilities such as invisibility, unusually long life, and others, but at a great price.  It was a corrupting force.  Regardless of the intent of the person who possessed the ring, no matter how it was used, the ring only answered to the one who made it.

Let’s unpack the concept that Tolkien was trying to convey.  The first and most obvious layer is that power corrupts.

“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.”

John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton, 1st Baron Acton

“Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it.”

William Pitt the Elder, Earl of Chatham and British Prime Minister from 1766 to 1778

The lure of the power in the ring was impossible to resist.  Men would do anything to gain possession of that power – lie, cheat, steal, kill.

Take a look around at all disconcerting tyrannies that I have written extensively about to date.  Those tyrannies are either aimed at obtaining, preserving, or strengthening power.

Yesterday, May 30th, the NSA’s Utah Data Center went live.  The center has the capability to capture, record, and analyze every form of electronic communication in the domestic United States every single day.

The Department of Homeland Security has expanded it’s mission from just protecting modes of travel to protecting and actively policing within the United States.

The warrantless wiretaps on the AP, the targeting of individual reporters such as James Rosen, the IRS’ unequal treatment of conservative, Tea Party, and Jewish groups are all methods being used to silence opposition and whistleblowers through intimidation.

More than 70 percent of federal spending goes to dependency programs.  The threat of removal of these programs ensures that dissension is unthinkable lest the life support that 128 million Americans rely on for subsistence be taken away.  These people have become serfs of the new feudal masters within the government (both elected and unelected).

Schools in Florida, under the guise of an insidious program called Common Core, scanned and retained the irises of school children for their “safety” and “security.”

These are just a few instances of huge power grabs, shows of naked force.  Each one by itself could be written off as nothing, an overreaction or overreach by overzealous bureaucrats, but together in concert they are much more.  They take on the mantle of a full blown tightening of the vise of tyranny on the citizens of the United States.

Now you might even be saying that I’m overreacting because I disagree with President Obama politically on nearly every issue, but it goes far beyond that.  I would disagree with these steps regardless of which party or President was in power at the time because I see these for the lure of power that they are and will be going forward.  That power becomes a drug for the person who wields it – they need it, and not to know that they have it, but they will need to exercise it in growing frequency in order to fulfill their craving for it.  The power will corrupt them.  Even if they began with the best of intentions, that power will destroy them.

The bureaucrats and politicians that come next will see the One Ring before them.  It will call to them, not with the clarion call of liberty, but with the sinister whisper of influence, authority, power, and strength, but those powers can only be wielded by the creator of the ring.

Who is the creator of the ring?

In Tolkien’s tale, Sauron, the Dark Lord, is the creator of the ring, but even he can be destroyed by it because he is ultimately dependent on it as well.  So did Sauron create the authority, power, and strength that were endowed into the ring or did he simply channel them there?  Let’s back this up to theology now… did Satan create the power that he yields?

The short answer is no.

God created Satan as Lucifer the angel.  Satan is dependent on God for his very existence.

One day the angelscame to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them.

Job 1:6

The authority, power, and strength that Satan holds were benefits of his created nature and were gifts of his position in the hierarchy of heaven.  It is Satan’s intent to disobey and rebel against God that corrupts those gifts.  Just as Satan rebels and corrupts those great and mighty gifts that God bestowed on him at his creation, the government – the politicians and bureaucrats, the authorities, the individual branches and big players have intents and purposes that run counter to the Constitutionally-directed role of the government and it’s relationship with the people altogether.  The small tyrannies summed together will corrupt even the best intended of those men and women because they will beg to be used… the temptation is too great.

THAT is why we rail against these overreaches.  THAT is why we sound the watchman’s call as the abuses and usurpations mount.

The enemy is not just at the gates.

The enemy is now within the city walls.

If we do not stand and fight and defeat these self-obtained powers, then we will lose whatever scrap of liberty that we have left on this Earth except for the hope that we have in Christ.

If power corrupts, we must rid ourselves of it.  If we do not want a corrupt government controlling every step we take in our lives, we must disrupt and dismantle it’s power to do so or we will find ourselves prisoners in our own country.

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Ephesians 6:12

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

James 4:7

Something Wicked This Way Comes

And the President claims that he knew nothing…

I call bull.  The President was involved DIRECTLY in the IRS targeting of Tea Party groups, conservative PACs, and Jewish PACs.

The President claims that he went to bed.  While that may in fact be true, it is a complete dereliction of duty regarding the Americans left to die in Benghazi on September 11, 2012.  In this case, I call bull also.  The truth is far more damaging – either the President willfully elected to deny support to sovereign US territory and US citizens under an active military attack, or was incapable of making a decision in the face of a live crisis.  The question that will be answered eventually is why.  Was the US State Department running guns via Benghazi and Turkey to the Syrian Islamist rebels against international law, a handful of treaties, and without the consent of Congress?

And now the Attorney General, Eric Holder, has committed perjury.  He either lied to Congress about his involvement with the search warrants he signed regarding James Rosen of Fox News or he lied to a judge (or rather three).  The search warrants listed Rosen as a co-conspirator or co-participant in the leak of classified information, but Holder testified to Congress that there was never the intent to prosecute.  Then why argue for a search warrant?  Why waste your time if you don’t intend to prosecute?  I call bull.  This Rosen issue follows the warrantless wiretapping of hundreds of members of the media.

Which narratives are left?

Benghazi – gun-running coverup?  Presidential incompetence and dereliction of duty?  Both are impeachable.

IRS – “punishing enemies” of the President? Top-to-bottom corruption of the tax-collection arm of the Federal government?  If Obama is indeed complicit, and having the IRS commissioner visiting the White House more often than three of the most common visitors who hold Cabinet-level positions combined looks terribly suspicious, then that is 100% Nixonian and impeachable.

Wiretapping – Fourth Amendment violation folks?  Justice Department corruption?  Holder has already proven a liar (as I outlined above), so we can not trust him to properly investigate himself.

Rosen – Political targeting again?  Anti-Fox News vendetta in the Administration?

The problem with each scandal is that it requires more than a modicum of civics knowledge to understand the underlying issues, motives, and precedents that will be set if such scandals are not pursued.

If we do not start seeing the connections between each scandal and drawing out the political motivations of EACH and EVERY scandal, then we will never fully expose the absolute threat to liberty and freedom that this administration has been and will be going forward if they are not stopped here and now.

Whence comes the straw?

Fast and Furious.

Benghazi.

The IRS targeting conservative and Jewish groups requesting tax-exempt status.

The DoJ tapping the phones of hundreds of reporters and editors in the media.

The DoJ tapping the House of Representatives cloak room to catch the same leak that they claimed they were hunting for when tapping the reporters’ and editors’ phones above.

That’s now five significant scandals directly tied to Cabinet-level departments.

The President has claimed ignorance of any of these scandals.

With Fast and Furious, the program involved proactively encouraging and enabling weapons smuggling across a foreign border without notifying Mexico of the program so that tracking could be established on the “other side.”

With Benghazi, the President claims that he went to bed and left it to then-Secretaries Panetta and Clinton to handle the ongoing attack and subsequent assassination of an US Ambassador and the deaths of three other American citizens on sovereign US territory.

With the IRS, those responsible keep coming in as higher and higher up – first a few “rogue” employees in Cincinnati, then supervisors in DC, etc with everyone pointing up to the person above them in the chain of operations.  The President claims he was not aware despite an inspector general’s investigation underway for years at this point.

The Department of Justice wiretap of media members and Congressmen brings serious questions up regarding freedom of the press, government intimidation of the press, violations of privacy, not to mention serious executive branch overreach by directly monitoring Congress.

The President is claiming ignorance of federal gun-running, the minutiae of the assassination of his ambassador to Libya, the specific politically-based targeting conducted by the IRS, the sledgehammer-to-catch-a-fly approach condoned by the Department of Justice with the media wiretaps, and the invasion of privacy and flat-out violation of the co-equal branches of government principle spelled out in the Constitution.

Mr. President, as a former attorney, you should be aware of the principle of law that ignorance of the law is not a valid defense for violation of it.  That aside, I am not the first to assert this, but I think it is extremely evident that the President is lying, because the only other excuse he has is that he truly is unaware of what is going on within his own Cabinet.

Dereliction of duty is a specific offense under United States Code Title 10,892. Article 92 and applies to all branches of the US military (UP TO AND INCLUDING THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF). A service member who is derelict has willfully refused to perform his duties (or follow a given order) or has incapacitated himself in such a way that he cannot perform his duties. Such incapacitation includes the person falling asleep while on duty requiring wakefulness, his getting drunk or otherwise intoxicated and consequently being unable to perform his duties, or his vacating his post contrary to regulations.

Dissonant Tyranny

It seems like the longer I write my thoughts down, the more frequently things that catch my attention come up.  I haven’t written as much recently, not because of a lack of passion, but a lack of anything different to say from the thousands of voices out there writing or speaking on the same issue.

I could write about President Obama’s speech in Mexico City where he thanked them for voting for him and blamed America for all of Mexico’s problems.

I could write about Bill Ayers’ speech at Kent State University on the anniversary of the Kent State Shooting decades ago and how he whitewashed his own history as a domestic terrorist just week after the Boston Marathon bombing.

I could write about Benghazi and the upcoming Congressional whistleblower hearings (I plan to do so after the fact).

What I really want to address is something said over the weekend at Ohio State University.

Unfortunately, you’ve grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that’s at the root of all our problems. Some of these same voices also do their best to gum up the works. They’ll warn that tyranny always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices.

President Barack Obama

This president was the keynote speaker at Ohio State’s commencement on May 4th (the same day that Bill Ayers spoke at Kent State coincidentally).  Unpacking this statement, he is basically stating that you should always trust government, that government will never encroach upon your rights, and that those that warn that it will are out of their minds.   Many four letter words come to mind to describe my initial reaction to that statement.

Oh, how we should trust the government… let me count the ways that I ripped from the headlines today.

DeMint on Immigration Reform: “If People Read the Bill, It Will Be Blocked.”

The Administration’s Benghazi Talking Points Were Complete Lies

And that’s just today.  To summarize – the government lied about healthcare coverage, warrantless wiretaps, billions and billions of rounds of unnecessary ammunition purchases, illegal immigration and amnesty costs, and an act of war committed across a US Consulate that was clear to most people at the start because it was damaging to the narrative put forth by the Administration at the height of a contentious political campaign that should have proved to be for Obama what the Iranian hostage crisis and preceding embassy attack was for the Carter administration in the 1970s.

Trust the government?

Those who are capable of tyranny are capable of perjury to sustain it.

Lysander Spooner

And for those that are not familiar with what perjury is (the conceptional understanding of common terms becoming an endangered species in higher education as it is today).

perjury (n): the voluntary violation of an oath or vow either by swearing to what is untrue or by omission to do what has been promised under oath : false swearing

Divine Providence

For those of my friends that choose to believe that America was founded as a secular nation, you have to ask yourself where the concepts that emboldened those brave men and women hundreds of years ago to cast a new nation on this Earth with the utmost of conviction and belief that God Himself was guiding them.

Excerpt from Know Your History by Bradlee Dean.

The University of Houston political science professors searched to find where the Founding Fathers chose their ideas:

They assembled 15,000 writings from the era of the founders.
They researched for 10 years, isolated 3,154 direct quotes and identified the source of the quotes:

8.3 percent were quotes from Baron Charles de Montesquieu;
7.9 percent were quotes from Sir William Blackstone;
2.9 percent were from John Locke;
34 percent of their quotes came directly from the Bible – and when researching where Montesquieu, Blackstone and Locke got their ideas, they found that theirs came from the Bible as well.
Consider Isaiah 33:22 from which you can extrapolate our three branches of government.
For the Lord is our judge,
    the Lord is our lawgiver,
the Lord is our king;
it is he who will save us.
